BBQ Cake

BBQ cake

What a fitting cake for a good friend’s 40th Birthday Surprise BBQ Party.

When I offered to make Tim’s birthday cake with under a weeks notice I was worried what sort of cake I would have time to make. Cakes for guys are always harder, I think it’s because there are less options.  With girls cakes if you can’t find a cake idea in one of their hobbies or favourite items then you always have the option of making something pretty.

To say that Tim is a Wests Tigers (originally Magpies) supporter is an understatement but a football cake was too obvious. When he’s not watching the footy or being coach for his son’s footy team he loves to man the barbeque. It’s his favourite spot to hang out at parties and gatherings because it’s also close to the beer fridge (with his homebrew) and near the stereo to play some tunes.

When I saw the BBQ cake in my autographed copy of Planet Cake’s first cake book I knew we were on to a winner.

With the help of my husband we added a personal touch to the cake by creating a beer label which had a Magpie type crest. We put it on a Toohey’s 250ml “Throw Down” bottle which was the perfect scale to sit beside the BBQ cake on the display board. Tim makes his own homebrew so we made the label read – Tim Kelly’s All Australian Home Brew – aged 40 years. We crinkled it up and aged it with a few dabs of a teabag to make it look old.

It was so much fun to make this cake and I was really happy with the results considering I had to do a lot of it in the early hours of the morning. Believe it or not it’s easier to concentrate when all my four kids are asleep!

I have made quite a few cakes from the first Planet Cake book so I’d definitely say it was worth the money to purchase it. Here are links to some of the other cakes I’ve made from the book – ice-cream and turntable cake cake. I’ve also made the lollypop but never blogged it. Have you heard about the Planet Cake TV show coming to the Lifestyle Food channel on Foxtel? I’ll be watching the premier on Wednesday night at 7:30.

      Thank you!

This is a great cake Lorelei! What sort of cake is it and how long did it take you to make?

It’s a chocolate mud cake layered with ganache. Need a dense type of cake for the shape. I did it over 3 nights (one night until 2am!). Easier to concentrate when kids in bed. 1st night bake cake, 2nd ganache cake and 3rd cover with fondant and decorate!

I recently made a Tim Tam cake (looks like a giant tim tam), for my sister’s birthday with chocolate sponge, layered with tim tams and chocolate frosting and chocolate ganache poured over the top, but your cake looks truly amazing. Mine took 2 days. I am starting to enjoy making and decorating cakes, but it takes such patience, which I don’t have a lot of! Thanks for sharing Lorelei.

Hi, love your cake! I want to make one myself, but really don’t know how to prevent it from collapsing. How did you make it stay in that shape?
