Here is my latest cake creation. A very hungry caterpillar cake for our son’s 1st birthday party.
When I couldn’t find an oval cake board locally I asked my husband if he could cut one for me out of MDF and shape it like a leaf. He did such a great job. I love having a very handy and creative husband. We work so well together for our kids parties and really make an awesome creative team!
I actually decided to gloss the leaf after I took this pic so on the day it looked really shiny like a real leaf. The vein pattern on the green rolled fondant was made by pressing a cabbage leaf into the fresh fondant.
The cake was banana cake this time as I wanted a yummy flavour for Zenon to try. Here is the shaped cake covered in white chocolate ganache and waiting to set before hot knifing the ganache to make it smooth. This was his body and his head was a round ball also made of banana cake which I put on last and secured with three dowels.
Little black rolled fondant legs finished off this very hungry caterpillar. I also added a nice green braided ribbon to the edge of the board which mades it all look nice and neat.
Here ‘s a cute close up of his head complete with Eric Carle’s sweet caterpillar face with green and yellow oval eyes and purple antennae.
I loved making this cake and the more I make the more enjoyable I find it and relaxed I am. This very hungry caterpillar was made during the school holidays during the day whilst simultaneously looking after 4 children (one of them being an adorable teething baby boy!).
