After all the birthday parties before Christmas I was thinking we’d have a big break before we had anymore. I forgot that January is my husband’s birthday. It wouldn’t be a birthday without cake and when we booked some friends to come over for a swim we thought we may as well invite a few more people and make a bit of a celebration for him.
Once again time was of the essence so it had to be something fairly uncomplicated. I’ve said it before but the 1st Planet Cake book is the best. Not only do I love the chocolate mud cake recipe which I used again for the thong cake but there are some great ideas for guys cakes in there too. You may remember the BBQ cake I made in 2011 from the same book and I’ve lost track of how many times I’ve used the mud cake recipe.
The “sand” is made by mixing royal icing with raw sugar. It really does look like sand but you have to work quickly with it as it sets quite hard fairly fast.
I had these two cuties watching me make my husband’s birthday cake.
Then the others came to “play” with the icing and baby decided it would be fun to climb on the kitchen table! Not what you need while you’ve rolled your fondant perfectly and want to cover your cake.
Hmmmm wonder what she’s been eating?
It was a great size cake for the amount of people at the party and there was none left over at all after everyone had a slice. The original cake before I cut it out was a 8 inch square chocolate mud which I had baked a few days before decorating (makes it much easier to work with).
The thong strap is made using thin strips of projector film and covering them with rolled fondant and using a small piece of dowel at the front of the strap. I had some paper towel stuffed underneath until the strap dried and hardened a bit to enable it to stand up on its own.
Another great cake for a very special guy. Not as complicated as the turntable cake I’ve made for him before but a fun and simple cake that can be decorated for either a guy or a girl using flowers and different colours on the thong.
Happy Birthday to my darling hubby! Now that has to be it for the birthdays… well for a while anyway.
