Mermaidens

Mermaiden doll

I have this cute book Wee Wonderfuls by Hillary Lang in my home craft library and I’ve always wanted to make something from it. When we were invited to an under the sea party for one of my daughter’s friends I decided to make the little mermaid softie called – Mermaidens as a gift for her.

I have since discovered that the pattern for the Mermaidens softie is available online for free here which is great if you want to try out one of the Wee Wonderful’s patterns. There are some other really cute softies in the book so it’s definitely worth a look as well.

I love how her starfish embellishment is just some rick-rac, very clever.

For her hair I used some velvet from my stash and then I also had the perfect mermaid scales fabric for her tail. You can embellish her as much or as little as you like really and if time is short she still looks sweet with just a few details. She’d look cute with a little pearl necklace and shimmering thread through her hair. I might have to use up the rest of this fabric and make some more for gifts or maybe even for the school fete if I have time.

My daughter loved giving her sweet friend a special homemade gift and her friend really liked her mermaid doll amongst the pile of plastic toys and 10 sets of colouring in pencils. Don’t get me wrong I don’t always have time to make gifts for parties but it is nice when you do.

P.S. Our other little friend loved her ripple bag birthday present too! Her mum told me that she wanted to wear it to bed she loved it so much. Cute!
