I love making homemade baby gifts for friends so when I heard of a new baby’s arrival I cast on this sweet little teething dolly that is perfect for a newborn as there are no buttons or bits that would make it dangerous for a newborn baby.
Luckily I had the perfect yarn in my stash, some Debbie Bliss Cotton DK in a hot pink. Such a sweet girly colour for their first little child.
Always loving to try new techniques this time I learnt the knitted i-cord and a twisting of the previous rows yarn over to close up the gaps called TyoR & TyoL.
This is knitted in the round so there are limited ends to sew in and it has a nice neat finish to the edges because of that. The cotton yarn was a bit sticky with my carbon fibre knitting needles so the end of my finger is a bit sore from pushing the needle down when I was knitting two together.
The pattern is free and you can download it from Ravelry here – Teething Dolly by Mishi Designs. It really is a nice quick baby gift that only took under one ball of yarn but looks super cute. I love the way the doll looks kind of like a star. There is also a version for a larger doll with a hat and they have given the head a different skin colour too. There are instructions for knitting it flat as well if you don’t like knitting in the round with a magic loop.
My daughter’s teacher is having a baby as well so I might have to make another one of these for her too.
Do you have a go to pattern for newborn baby gifts? I think it’s nice to mix it up a bit but I can understand when you find a fabulous pattern why you keep making it over and over again.
