How cute is this little knitted chapstick holder?
I don’t know about you but once either me or my kids get dry lips we have to apply chapstick pretty regularly to heal them again. Then we go out or can’t seem to find where we last left the chapstick so they take longer to recover. The solution – make a Chapstick holder so you always have your lip balm close by.
You will need to pick some sock weight yarn. I found this pretty ball of Moda Vera yarn at Spotlight called “Not Just Socks” which has about 420m of yarn in the 100g ball. It’s 50% super wash wool , 25% polyamide, 25% bamboo and the colour I used was called Berry.
I love the way the yarn has knitted up in diagonal stripes. You can find the free pattern for the chapstick holder over on Ravelry here. You’ll also need some double pointed knitting needles to do the very small circumference knitting and a stitch marker.
Chapstick is my favourite brand of lip balm and I love this strawberry flavoured one the best. Yum!
It’s still pretty easy for little fingers to get the Chapstick out of the holder and put it back in.
The only modifications I made were with the strap. Instead of doing a chain strap when I came to the end of the holder and binding off the top stitches I kept the last 4 on a knitting needle and then kept knitting those 4 stitches as an i-cord. This made it take a little longer to knit however I really like the finished results. After making the i-cord strap long enough I then bound off the stitches and left a long enough tail so that I could use it to sew the strap to the other side of the holder.
You can wear it outside your clothes as a kind of necklace/bag or under a jacket or jumper if you want it to be hidden but still at easy access. If you knitted a short i-cord it could also be attached to the side of a bag or school backpack so it’s easy to quickly grab and put some on your lips.
Do you need a Chapstick holder in your life? What is your favourite lip balm?
