Homemade A-Line Striped Skirt

Homemade A-Line Striped Skirt

I call this my “Netball Mum Skirt”. The perfect black and white striped A-line skirt to wear with my Vans to take the girls to Saturday morning netball. Or should I call it “most of my Saturday” netball. This year all three of our daughters are playing netball so it’s a long day from 8am until about 2pm when you finally make it out of the very busy carpark. They love it though and we have made some great friends through netball for which I am very thankful.

The pattern I used to make this A-line skirt was Simplicity 1201 Version B which is a 4 piece short skirt with the centre seam and then the small waistband. I cut out my waistband a little wider than the pattern to add a bit to length and to get a flatter waist like another skirt I made a while ago.

Alas even with the extra width in the waistband it wouldn’t have been long enough after I hemmed the skirt so I had to make another modification. I added some satin bias binding to the bottom edge to finish off the hem so that I would not lose anymore length. If I made this skirt again I would add a bit more to the length but this modification worked this time.

The striped fabric is from Spotlight stores and is a deluxe ponte stripe fabric which is 150cms wide and costs $19.99 pm. I bought 1.5 metres to make this skirt. With stripes the main challenge is matching the stripes up and this skirt looks good because they do all match up perfectly. The extra time I took using some washable adhesive to match the stripes at the seams was well worth it for the end result.

You could also baste the seams first to make sure they match so that when you took them to the sewing machine to actually sew them they’d all match.

netball mum skirt

It was such a hot day at netball yesterday that I was glad to be wearing a skirt instead of jeans however I’m sure I won’t be wearing this in the middle of winter but it is the perfect autumn netball skirt until it gets too cold. I often go for a walk with the other kids while one is training so this skirt is perfect for netball training too.

Do your kids play netball? What do you like to wear to kids sport? Are you a netball mum? Do you love it or hate it.
