Recently I knitted up this cute newborn baby garter ear flap hat pattern by Purl Soho which has been on my ‘wish to knit’ list for ages. Simple, stylish and super cute in grey for a little bubba boy.
The free pattern which you can find here calls for an Aran weight or 10ply yarn so it’s knits up nice and quickly and is super squishy.
For this hat I actually used 1 ball of Ewe Ewe Yarns Baa Baa Bulky which is 120 mtrs (or 132yds) and 100% plied merino wool from my gifted December Knitcrate subscription. I really enjoyed knitting with this yarn so much that I knitted up the black ball that was also sent in a different pattern for myself which also turned out really well.
The ear flaps are shaped using short rows but because the short rows are worked in garter stitch you don’t have to pick up the wraps so that saves time and doesn’t need to scare you off if you haven’t knitted short rows before.
Sizes available for this pattern actually range from baby through to large adult! Not sure I’d put the tassle on that one though.
Don’t get me wrong, I think the tassel on the top is super cute on a baby size!
My daughter has gifted it to her dance teacher and I really hope she likes it. First baby and all I remember how overwhelming it can all be I’m not surprised that I haven’t heard back from her.
It’s a great pattern to add to your Ravelry library for new baby gifts and I’m sure I’ll be making it again. I knitted most of this while away camping but neglected to bring my double pointed needles to finish the top so had to do that when we got back otherwise it would have been done in a day or two. I think this pattern is a great option for little boys which is great as I always seem to find so many cute patterns for girls!
