I offered to make a birthday cake for my friends 30th birthday party as her present. She was turning 30 so having a big party that my husband and I helped organise. The theme was 1920’s so I decided on a hexagon shaped cake with two tiers.
As usual I do the cakes over three days so it is hard to calculate exactly how much time it takes.
With the cake needed for the party on a Saturday night I baked two 9 inch square chocolate mud cakes and made the ganache on the Wednesday.
On Thursday I shaped, layered and ganached the two cakes.
Friday I was actually not well so decided to leave covering the cakes with the rolled fondant and decorating until the Saturday morning when my mum was looking after my daughters for me so I could do it uninterrupted. This worked out very well and didn’t take long at all to cover them and do the final decorations.
I used black lace sticky ribbon around the top tier and then stuck some of the same sticky ribbon onto a silver ribbon for the bottom tier. Then placed some and little sugar pearls on the top layer under the ribbon with royal icing .
I found a pretty diamante number 30 decoration and added a few ostrich feathers that I bought on the bay. I piped a little black decorative swirl around the feather decoration at the top and placed some more sugar pearls around the plastic tube which I insterted into the cake to put the feather decoration into. I finished it off with four sugar diamonds around the black piping and three black candles. The venue had a clear perspex stand that I put the cake on which lifted it a bit higher and made it look grand.
