My husband and I have been on a health kick lately. We are not calling it a diet but a lifestyle change. We’ve both lost a bit of weight and one of the things we like for breakfast is wholegrain bread toasted with an almond and chia spread on top. You can find it in the health food section of your local supermarket but I decided to make our own using the Thermomix.
I bought a big bag of roasted almonds and added 200gms by weighing it into the Thermomix. Then I chopped them up for 40 seconds on speed 7. I did stop the thermo a couple of times and scraped down the sides so that it chopped them evenly and the almonds started forming a nice paste after a while.
Then I added 20 gms of black chia seeds and mixed them in the Thermomix for 8 seconds, spoon mixing position on reverse so the seeds are split.
Chia seeds are high in fibre, gluten free and full of Omega 3’s. There are lots of other health benefits you can read about here or this blog post with more info and some other great recipes. The phosphorus in almonds helps build strong bones and teeth and they help lower cholesterol. I like it better than peanut butter and it’s so much better for you.
Even some of the kids love it which is great. Zenon is such a good eater, he’ll try anything which is great and it’s good we are eating better as it’s been a fabulous influence on him and the girls. He’s even been having some of my green juice lately!
The only thing is that you have to check your teeth before you go out and smile at anyone. I’ve dropped the kids at school and then gone home and caught my reflection in the mirror and to my horror I had little black chia seeds in between some of my teeth.
You could try and use a Bamix or blender to make this recipe as well but of course it’s just super easy and quick with the Thermomix. Let me know if you try my recipe and you like it. I’d love to hear from you.
