Last year I started off with a big crochet project by joining One Crafty Mumma’s ripple blanket crochet along. There are a few blanket patterns still on my list of things to make and it was so enjoyable that I decided to join another crochet along this year. I’m going to be using Moda Vera Beetle from Spotlight as quite a few balls will be needed and it’s pretty reasonably priced. It’s too hot to make a wool blanket at the moment so this is a good choice as it’s 50% cotton and 50% acrylic. I decided on the colours because I had these balls in my stash already. I’m not quite sure how many it will take but I have 15 balls which is made up of 3 of each of the 5 colours.
I wanted to stick to more masculine colours as we have so many pink blankets I thought it would be nice to have one for Zenon to pull over himself when he needs a lap blankie to snuggle up under.
For my blanket I’m using a 4.00mm crochet hook and I’ve started with 144 chains (and then 2 more chains for turning) and I’m using the beautiful pattern called “As We Go Stripey Blanket” which was originally created by Jules from Little Woollie (and called mixed stitch stripy blanket). Then Hannah from Not Your Average Crochet was inspired by Little Woollie’s pattern and created her own version called “As We Go Stripey Blanket”. She has spent a lot of time creating a tutorial for the pattern and you can download the two versions for free. One is the written pattern and then the other version is a very detailed pattern with pictures for all the stitches which is great to just refer to if you’re stuck.
This blanket pattern is a great way to try some new stitches as every row the pattern changes to a new stitch. I’m only 17 rows in and I have already learnt and done a row of star stitches and Catherine wheels. It keeps the project really interesting and challenging as you work out the new stitches.
There is a Ravelry group here if you would like to join in the crochet along. I’m not going to rush mine as I just enjoy having a big project to turn to when I want to do some crochet especially on long car like in the above picture when I did a few rows on our long drive to a wedding recently. Plus I have so many things on the go at the moment and a special little girl starting Kindy tomorrow. Life is busy and this blanket will help remind me to slow down and enjoy it.
Do you want to join and make an “As We Go Stripey Blanket” too?
