Hello! Today I wanted to share with you my 10 top tips for organising great parties. Hopefully some of these tips will help you have a fun and fantastic kids party with a lot less stress.

1. PLAN AHEAD

Decide if you can what the theme to the party will be months in advance. That way you can start searching for ideas and items early. You can always find party supplies a lot cheaper and totally in theme with your party if you have time up your sleeve. I find a lot of my party supplies on eBay and if time is on your side then you can even order from overseas suppliers as it doesn’t matter how long it takes in the post.

If the party is based on a movie make sure you watch it or if it’s a book read it and make notes of ideas that come to mind. Also don’t forget to create a Pinterest board and pin things to it when you find them.

2. START A PARTY COLLECTION

Create a little collection of lovely party props by buying some great party items to use over and over again at your parties. Here is a list of a few items I have which have been well worth the investment as I use them at every party.

  • A portable table from Bunnings or the like
  • A plain white tablecloth to fit the table. Even if you add a strip of coloured fabric as a table runner you will still need a white tablecloth that covers the whole table underneath it.
  • Apothecary jars. Pretty glass jars to hold lollies in for you party table. It’s best to buy them in pairs so that your party table is balanced.
  • Pretty white cake stand. Coloured cake stands are gorgeous but they may not always fit into your colour scheme whereas a white one will never fail you
  • Plain white rectangle and square plates. These can always be decorated with scrapbook paper, little lollies or washi tape

3. DO A TEST SET UP

Once I have gathered a few items I plan to use of the party table I set them out and work out what is and isn’t needed for the table.

Think about having different heights on your party table. You can use simple things like styrofoam squares wrapped in paper or fabric or sometimes I find items at the dollar store  like a box, glass jar or even a new waste paper basket!

4. HAVE A PLAN FOR THE DAY OF THE PARTY

Have a plan to keep your kids busy on the morning of the party. There are always last minute details to take care of and it can be hard with excitable kids who keep asking how long till everyone arrives. If you’ve tidied your house for the party it also helps it stay that way! Sometimes my lovely neighbour looks after mine before a party, however you could ask a relative to come early to help keep the kids busy, put on a movie for them or alternatively if those aren’t options have some simple tasks for them to help with away from the party area. I’m always less stressed if I’m not  looking after them all as well as getting the party ready.

5. PICK ONE AREA TO DECORATE

To save money and for high impact focus on one area i.e. a party table rather than trying to decorate your whole house or venue.

6. ALLOW TIME TO TAKE SOME PHOTOS BEFORE YOUR GUESTS ARRIVE

Make sure you allow enough time to take photos of your party. If paying for a professional photographer isn’t an option (and it never is for me!) just make sure you allow an extra 1/2 hour to take some nice photos of all your hard work. I always take the photos myself however I’ve been caught out once when I hadn’t taken them yet and guests started arriving.

7. PLAN A COUPLE OF ACTIVITIES

They can just be simple old school type games like sack races, the chocolate game or musical statues although it’s even more fun to think of activities in line with your theme. For example we painted white fabric roses red for our Alice in Wonderland party.

8. PARTY COLOURS

Pick colour scheme to go with you party theme. Go for 3 main colours at the most for maximum impact.

9. CREATIVE LOLLY BAGS

Try and brainstorm some fun ideas for lolly/loot bags to give out at the end of a party. It doesn’t have to be stacked with lollies as the actual lolly bag can be part of the gift.

10. TAKE LOTS OF PHOTOS

You can never have too many photos of a party and the kids will love looking back through them. Besides the pre-party photos make sure you spend some time to take some during the party too. If you’re too flat out enlist someone you know can take good photos to help you. On a side note you can’t guarantee they’ll be any good if you’re not taking them yourself. I did this at one party where I had to enlist the help of a guest… the photos all turned out slightly purple! Don’t know what went on there so now I always double check them!

If you’d like to check out some of my other parties you’ll find them under the “play” category, however there are also cakes and lolly bag ideas you can find in those sections.
